THIS JUST IN...

In the last 30 minutes we've had lessons in: Reading, Vocabulary, Phonics, Parts of Speech, Bible, Character, and Spelling!

Esther was begging Isaac to read "The Berenstein Bears and Too Much Birthday" to her. He was happy to oblige and sat down with her (sorry the camera has dead batteries or we'd have pics and a video of this one!) to read it.  He stopped every few sentences to identify the nouns, adjectives, and some verbs. I don't remember teaching him verbs, but clearly he learned about them somewhere. 

Parts of speech : Check!

Somewhere along the way he came across the word "Celebration", which he made a valiant effort at sounding out.  I simply told him that when there is an "e" after a "c", then the "c" makes an "s" sound and you still sound out the "e".  That was all it took, he sounded it out on his own quite easily after that and found a few more words in the book that necessitated that same lesson!

Phonics : Check!

He also found several words that he didn't know the meaning of like "Timber", "Scoffed", and a few others.  He now knows that "timber" has two meanings. 1) Woods or forest. and 2) What you yell when a tree you're chopping is getting ready to fall down.  He has since used it at least 3 different times appropriately when he's getting ready to knock something over!  "Scoffed" took a little more explaining, but he understands it to mean a tone of voice that's used when you don't believe something that's told to you.  He promptly, with less than 3 seconds to think about it, asked if the soldiers were scoffing at Jesus because they didn't believe that He was the Messiah and Savior.  Well, the answer is yes, yes they were, but that they probably feel a whole lot different about that now!

Vocabulary : Check!
Bible : Check!

He's been walking around rattling off the spelling of a few of the "tricky to sound out" words ever since he got up from reading the book. Words like "meant", "piling", "rented", "pony", "reign". 

Spelling : Check!

He's already planning his birthday party for next year so that it's not "Too Much Birthday". In his words, "I want to have fun with my friends, not have them have fun with too much stuff."  Already learning simple is good and less is better..LOVE IT!

Character : Check!

All in All, a pretty productive book reading I'd say!  What have you read with your little ones this week?
